Alpine Canoeing

From 2-12 July, 24 beneficiaries – all with a variety of injuries and illnesses, from amputations to PTSD and depression – took to the French rapids in an adrenaline-pumping adventure. Kindly funded by Help For Heroes, these holidays are some of the most exhilarating and beneficial in our calendar. They truly encapsulate our motto ”From Comradeship To Challenge” – all those who attend relish the challenge of taking on the the rapids whilst helping and encouraging each other.

For some veterans simply leaving the house can be a struggle. These trips provide an escape from their daily routines, a psychological boost and the courage to go out and live fuller lives. One veteran said: “Over the past 5 years I have had numerous admissions into mental health units, some for lengthy periods of time. I have also had many attempts at different therapies, but that one week canoeing trip has certainly been the most effective.”

Another mentioned: “Not only did I have the best time and make amazing new friends (brothers really), but the trip had the single biggest positive impact to my recovery and health. Because of the trip with you and the friends I’ve made, I’m the strongest I’ve been since I came home sick from work last September. I’ve got more confidence for the future, I’m more socially active, and I’ve realised I need to do as much adventurous and sport activity as possible to further my recovery.”

Thank you to all those who make this trip possible, including Help for Heroes and the awesome instructors.
