The Not Forgotten is deeply saddened by the passing of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Benjamin Bathurst GCB DL, who died peacefully in Gibraltar on Sunday 12 October 2025, aged 89.
Sir Benjamin retired as Senior President of The Not Forgotten in February this year, having served with distinction since 2000. His wise counsel, enduring presence, and deep understanding of service life shaped the tone and traditions of our charity in ways that will long be felt. As President, he presided over fifty Royal events, often in the presence of our Patron, HRH The Princess Royal and senior members of the Royal Family. Affectionately known as ‘Sir Ben’, he brought grace, continuity and dignity to occasions that uplifted thousands of veterans and service personnel.
Sir Ben’s impact was subtle but deeply influential as the charity navigated a changing world and in particular a changing Defence and veteran landscape. He helped guide The Not Forgotten so that those we support felt valued and their service recognised. Our community is profoundly grateful for his years of thoughtful stewardship and the strength and dignity he brought to our charity.
We extend our sincere condolences to Lady Bathurst and Sir Ben’s family. He will be remembered with admiration, affection and gratitude.
